隱球菌抗原 (Cryptococcal Antigen, CrAg)檢驗主要偵測新型隱球菌 (Cryptococcus neoformans)或格特隱球菌 (C. gattii)細胞壁外厚實的莢膜多醣體 (Capsular Polysaccharide)，是診斷隱球菌腦膜炎與全身性感染最快速且高敏感度的黃金指標。 此菌廣泛存在於鴿糞、土壤及尤加利樹環境中，經呼吸道吸入後，對於細胞免疫缺損者 (特別是 HIV/AIDS 患者、器官移植者)極易引發致命性的腦膜炎或播散性感染。

隱球菌 (Cryptococcus)為具有莢膜的yeast，主要存在於環境、土壤、樹木、鳥類糞便中，會造成人類疾病的主要是Cryptococcus neoformans與Cryptococcus gattii。 Cryptococcus依照莢膜抗原主要可區分為A、B、C、D四種血清型，分別為grubii變異型（血清型A）、neoformans變異型（血清型D）和gattii變異型（血清型B和C）。
